There's a sweet little homewares store near my work that I have been meaning to visit for quite a while. A friend put me onto it by recommending it by Facebook (ahhh Facebook... Is there anything you can't do?). I finally popped in as I saw their jumble sale advertised (on Facebook). The store is much smaller than I was expecting, but just as lovely. There are a few smaller items, like crockery, ornamens, handbags and jewellery, but the main event is the furniture. Unfortunately, there isn't a place in our house for a large, cypress Sweedish cupboard from the 60's at a very reasonable price, no matter how I looked at it. Or a lovely pair of white vinyl arm chairs. Sigh. I did pick up a cool piece of kitchenalia for mum for Mother's Day, given I can hold off presenting it to her until then.

I also bought a card, which is my first slip in my buy nothing new for 2012... But I think I can get off on a technicality. Firstly, it was purchased at a second hand store. Secondly, it is a wedding card that will house a gift for a lovely couple whose wedding we have to miss (and due to unforeseen circumstances, the hens night, too). So you see, it had to be a very specific card; something special that I didn't have in my cupboard, and please, making a birthday card is one thing... So what do you think? Am I off the hook? Did I mention it was made by a local artist?

On my way home, I came across another little gem. I had seen the sigh once before, a long, long time ago, but didn't stop in, and to be honest, had completely forgotten about it. "Boutique op shop". There was no driving past that sign.. And I was not disappointed. In fact, my words as I caught sight of this side-street wonder were, "you little ripper".The front pavement was a collection of shoe, bag and scarf racks, as well as homewares and about 9 clothing racks for men, women, teens and kids. I'm not sure what they do on a rainy day, as the shop itself is packed, too. Luckily today it was lovely and sunny. Perfect weather for trawling the racks.

The items are you run-of-the-mill brands, everything from Target to Witchery, but all in good condition. The staff are very nice, too, knocking a dollar off here and there to make a cheap buy just that little more brag-worthy. Everything is organised in size and type, which you know I love. I picked up a hot pink, Grecian-style dress with 'jewels' along the neckline. I'm planning to wear it to a wedding in April. I bought a back up, you know, just in case. A nice black dress with a boat neck, which I find really flattering. Actually, it's a very nice cut. Takes a few kilos off, which you can't argue with. A pair of control-topped panties and I'm all over it for a special occasion.

What else, what else? Ah yes, a sweet little serving plate, and a great little maroon dress with a white pattern, and a very flattering shirt with a pretty ruffled collar. Most items were around $6.00 each, which I think was very reasonable. There opening hours are a little odd, but if you can make it to this great little store, you won't be disappointed. Oh, and if you are looking for a particular piece of furniture, give Three Card Trick a call with a description and a price range, and she will try to hunt it down for you. Now that's service!

A little while ago, I bought a sweet little pussy bow shirt; short sleeves, musk pink with tiny grey stars. I love it. I wear it to work tucked into a pencil skirt and heels, as well as loose with capri pants or business pants and ballet flats. It's a flattering cut and one of my favourtie shirts, so you can imagine my delight when I was in the Red Cross the other day and found the same shirt but black with little purple stars. Oh, and did I mention it was half price?

I picked up a couple of other cute little bits and pieces while I was there: a nice, warm, heavy knit dress (yep, I know it's summer, but you can't really tell at the moment!) and some giant tartan clip on earrings. No, I haven't gone all punk, or you know, Scottish. I like to use clip on earrings as shoe clips. The big, garish, over-the-top ones look ridiculous attached to your lobes, but rather sweet on your toes. You know the ones: the kind Blanch wore on the Golden Girls. The ones that, in the early years, Stephanie Forester had to remove before answering the phone. Now that's sacrificing for fashion!

Pretty cute, really. But I recommend not wearing your favourite stockings with them, just in case. And maybe check the comfort factor by, oh I don't know, wearing them whilst baking or cleaning the house.

I’ve been thinking about a pair of shoes I own. I rememberwhen I bought them, well over 12 months ago. Mum, dad and I headed to the HolyTrinity – 3 op shops on Findon Rd, all within a couple of hundred metres ofeach other. This isn't the only Holy Trinity - it's a generic label that a group of op shops earns under 2 conditions, (i) there areat least 3 of them (any more, at which point they become known as the HolyTrinty +1), (ii) you have greatsuccess in all three (or four. I have yet to experience five, but I am stillyoung!). The other one is in Murray Bridge, where there is(?was) a church op shop, a Flying Doctors’, Salvos and a Vinnies, all withinclose proximity to one another. A long time ago, there was a Holy Trinity on South Road inReynella: Salvos, Vinnies and a church. Sadly, only the latter two remain, andthe church op shop is not delivering the quality it used to (sorry, guys). Iremember feeling quite sad when they tore down the Salvos.

But I’m getting off track with my sweet, sweet memories. TheHoly Trinity on Findon Rdnever fails to impress. On this particular day, we headed there to find thatthe Vinnies had closed down. Disappointing, as I once bought the coolestcoloured metal bowl set that I still cherish to this day, but the Salvos andGoodwill always produced the goods, too!

We started at the Salvos. For some time, I had been lookingfor a black leather jacket. Nothing too bikerchick, just something of soft leather that I could throw over everythingfrom a t-shit and jeans-combo to a cocktail dress. The odds of finding aleather jacket in good condition that wasn’tmade in the 1970s is no mean feat in an op shop, but there it was, as though ithad been waiting just for me. Initially, I thought that it was tagged at$49.99. Then I realised, with delight and skipped heartbeat, that it was actually$14.99! If the Gods were really smiling on me, it would have been a half-pricetag, but I wasn’t complaining!

Wait. I’m off track again. The shoes. Well, I had betterwrap that part of the story and say I did indeed get some lovely things from theSalvos. The shoes in question, however, were found across the road at Goodwill.

Mollini. New. Leather. Lovely. Wait, I really should givemore of a description than that, so you can weigh in at the end: to keep ornot to keep? Mollini rarely disappoint as shoes. I have a few pairs, all ofwhich I bought at the Emporio Shoes in Rundle Mall, an awesome 3-storey Mecca that I used tofrequent when I worked in town. The shoes were a little out of my price range($100!), so the pairs I have bought from there, I have to admit to treasuring.

This pair were a had-to-have. Mid brown ankle boots with 3faux buckles and a time-saving zip at the side. The toe is a rounded point, andthey are a solid shoe with a reasonable heel-size. I felt certain I would havea hundred places to wear them in winter, with a hundred outfits. Apparently, sodid the previous owner, until she discovered what I have: they are a difficultshade of brown to match, they feel a little strange to walk in (I think theyhave a built-in platform) and it is a rare occasion that calls for a triplebuckled ankle boot.

The reason I have held on to them for so long is the anguishthat I may one day find the perfect outfit to go with these boots having already paseed passing them on (not the first pair of Molloni shoes I have tried to buy anoutfit for), and the simple fact that they are so darn pretty.

What to do, what to do? Keep them or pass them on in thehope that they will go to a lovely home where their potential will befulfilled? It’s a bit of a dilemma, but even as I ask the question, I think Imay already know the answer… Winter is just around the corner, but there areenough shopping days between now and then to find the perfect outfit to go withthe loveliest of boots... Perhaps I simply need to shop more, and practicewalking in them. Hmmm. Challenge accepted! Thanks for your help J

The first day of the rest of the year

I briefly toyed with the idea of not shopping in the first week of the year. A symbolic gesture; to start the year as I intend to go on. Then I realised that was a pile of poop, and headed to the nearest op shop to get a fix.

Actually, I was heading to the Chemist. I had been planning to do this all day, and made a mental note of all of the things I would want to buy (blush, head bands) and why I wasn't going to buy it (I have 7 shades already; I don't wear them often enough to justify owning as many as I do). Then I couldn't find a park, or the discount chemist, come to think of it, so I headed to the Salvos on Broadway at Glenelg, given it was so close and on my way.

Now, I hadn't mentally prepared myself for an op shop, which is why I walked out with two pairs of heels and two dresses. Seriously, I'm not even sure how this happens. But it did, and it was awesome. I didn't get a thorough look around, as I had somewhere to be, so I did what I always do when I have limited time: I buzz dresses and shoes.

It paid off... One pair are sort of sensible black pumps with a thick heel and a faux buckle on the toe. Good for work, but likely to sneak into my weekend wardrobe occasionally. They're Joanne Mercer, so they're good quality, and have barely been worn. The other pair are patent black RMK Mary Janes and I love love love them. They have quite a high heel, but the width and strap make them easy to walk in (I'm still waiting for my camera arrive, otherwise there would be a photo of them. The detail on the toes is gorgeous). I'm not sure these have even been worn. Perhaps someone couldn't hack 'em?

I'm quite pleased with the two dresses. One is just a rayon and somethingerather number, but it looks like silk and is rather comfortable. It's a button-through dark blue dress, and I think, given the casual nature of work this week (eg no patients) and the stinking hot weather, I may just crank it out one day this week, before it is retired to my floordrobe. The other is a mini shift dress: black lace with long sleeves and a pink underlay. The material is really soft, and the lace is so delicate and pretty (hurry up, Mr Postman, I need my camera!).

Now I need to find room to store them. Although, I have a few pairs of shoes on the pile for the next clothes swap, and more than one dress, let me tell you. I wasn't sure about one pair of heels, so I gave them one more chance on the weekend. I like them, but I no longer love them, so onto the pile. And instantly, I feel better about the two pairs of shoes I just bought. Huh. Who would have thought it was that easy?

Total spent: $32.76 (it was supposed to be cheaper, but the lady seemed new, and, you know, it is a charity)

Savers Sale - Nailed it!

Oh WOW. It was worth getting up early during my holidays to go the Savers sale. To the victor go the spoils. The early bird gets the worm. Beware the sale-shopper; she will ram you with her trolley....

Getting there early was definitely the best move. Although there was plenty on the racks, it meant we could move more easily, get into the change rooms within a reasonable time frame, and avoid some angry, angry southerners. We arrived a little after eight in the morning, and there was about the usual number of people as on a Saturday. By about 9am it started to get busy, and by 10am, well, lets just say you could have written a decent novella in the time it took to get to a change room. I went with the 'mum' option (see previous posts) and tired clothes on over my dress. Sorry to the lady who I punched in the head whilst trying on the most darling little Basque cardigan. But, you know, beware flying limbs in a half price sale; eye of the tiger, lady. Eye of the tiger.

By about 1030, we all needed a coffee and some lunch (hey - early start, okay?). We headed over to Colonnades, where I passed on my sister's choice of sushi (endurance food, she tells me), and waited a ridiculous amount of time for a sandwich. Seriously, the change room line at Savers would have been quicker. Anyway, after a quick shop at Equip, we headed back for round 2, which lasted about another 2 hours! Wish I'd eaten sushi...

So what did I get? What didn't I get, more like it. Oh. Pants. I didn't get pants. Whilst I'll try on tops, dresses and shirts in the public eye, I draw the line at pants and skirts. But I'm more of a frock girl anyway. I'd say the highlight was a lovely, flattering and rather expensive-looking Basque wrap dress (it's the dream, really). I scored a handful of other Basque, Cue, Esprit, Country Road, Portmans and Tommy Hilfiger items, as well as a couple of retro and Supre bizzos that were in good nick. Actually, of the many, many, MANY clothes I looked at, I came across one with a small stain, which is pretty good, really. I'm always pleased with the amazing condition of everything in the store.

Not forgetting my patient, loving husband waiting at home, I scoured the menswear section for a little some'n some'n for him. Whilst the section is large (maybe 1/3 the size of the women's section, which is not unusual, really, but when the ladies section is massive...), there wasn't a lot for my svelte man. I did find him a Liverpool soccer shirt and a book, so, you know, go me. And to his credit, he was both appreciative of this presents and impressed by mine!

So all in all, a cracking day with some fine, fine second-hand treats. So take my advice: clear your day for the next Savers sale, get there when the doors open, and eat sushi for lunch. Oh, and beware of flying limbs.

Challenge for 2012

I have set myself a challenge for 2012. Not a New Year's resolution; we all know they don't work, and only end up depressing us when we fail miserably in mid-January. No, this is a challenge, and one which will require a little assistance from you. Don't worry! You don't have to do much beyond provide a little encouragement, and if you see me in Target, eyeing of a frock or two, smack my hand away. For me, a self-confessed shopping addict ("shopaholic" always sounds too cutesy and fun. Stupid pop culture), it's going to be somewhat tougher...

So here it is: in 2012, I will not buy anything from a first-hand shop. Everything I need, from a work skirt to craft supplies, will be bought from a second hand store or website. I'm not going to carry on about social obligation, fast-fashion, carbon footprints or landfill (as if any of that has ever stopped me before). I'm just challenging myself to stop consuming enough stuff for eighty people, that's all.

There are, of course, a handful of exceptions, such as underwear. I can tell you now, everything that grazes my bare bum will be new. But there are conditions, rules, guidelines to ensure every potential shopping outlet (pun intended) is curtailed.

The Pledge

I will not buy any form of clothing from a first hand shop. There are 5 exceptions to this: Feb 25th 2012; underwear (ew); sneakers (again, ew); presents for other people (was that a collective sigh of relief I just heard?); when overseas (gimme a break! But I wont go nuts, as we'll be a little broke whilst over there).
Before I head off to buy new socks/bras/grundies, I have to do at lease one load of washing. There has been more than one occasion where I was under the impression I had very few undies, and set off to Target to rectify this (and while I was there, pick up a couple of other essentials, such as a new frock/skirt/shirt/pants), only to do a load of washing that weekend and find that, actually, I have more than enough to go on a 6 month laundering fast.
I will not buy any accessories from a first hand shop. This includes hair accessories as well as bags, shoes and shiny things (I don't have heaps of hair, so all good).
I will not buy any craft supplies from a first hand shop. The only exception is needle/thread, but only when I have run out of existing supplies. And I have to hunt in op shops first.
I will only buy second hand housewares, with the exception of large household items that we need (I think our fridge is on its last legs. Fortunately, I was given a camera for Christmas; I have bought second hand cameras twice, and each time has been a disaster). When doing home renos, (where possible) we'll use recycled materials, which opens up a whole new world of salvage yards my husband will be thrilled about...
I will not buy new stationary. *Sniff* Farewell, Typo. We'll always have Harbour Town.
I will not buy any wrapping paper or cards. I will use up what I have then make my own.
I will not buy any cosmetics until I have used what I have. Seriously, I'll be okay for the 12 months.
I will only buy toiletries when I have used what I already have. That means you, guest soaps.
I will not (gulp) buy a new magazine. I have my subscription to Shop Til You Drop (shut up) so that will have to do.
I will not buy books from a first hand store. In fact, I'll read what I already bloody-well own before I go out searching for more reading material.
I will not sulk, stamp my feet, whinge or do an angry-dance when I can't have the new shoes/bag/dress/eyeshadow (except on here; I mainly meant in public).
I will record what I have spent and on what in a lovely diary that is filled with pictures of shoes. Torturous, really.
I will report back to you on everything I buy so as to be held accountable. Unless it's a present for someone; I don't want to ruin the surprise! I'm sure there will be the odd post where I describe how I feel about it all, too.
I will accept suggestions, in case I haven't thought of something. And trust me, by mid-January, I'll come up with several loop holes if you don't plug them for me first.

So there it is. One woman's attempt to stop consuming more than is reasonable (hmmm, vague enough for ya?). It's going to be a tough year, and retail therapy will not be as easily accessible to help deal with it! At least I have my birthday in March to ease the pain and have already started a list... Seriously, if anyone gives me a voucher for a first hand store, it is going to stay in the house until Jan 1st 2013, at which time I'm certain I would have grown as a person and no longer need drop coin on anything cute and shiny. Well, it helps to have a goal, right...? Wish me luck!

Post Christmas sales, Op Shop Style

I like a sale. Nothing gets me more fired up that an awesome bargain, the kind that wins you bragging rights for every subsequent wear. Like the Portmans shirt dress with a-line skirt that I'll be wearing to Christmas lunch with the in-laws. Did I mention it was Santa-red. Hellllllooooo Mrs Clause! Half price from my favourite Salvos a couple of weeks ago. $7.50. Fabulous condition, of course, and fits quite nicely, may I say.

So where will I be when the stores open at the end of the holiday? Target? Unlikely (their stuff is cheapest at the end of January). Kmart? Surely you jest! Myer? Weeeeellllllllll. No, actually. The only thing I want from Myer remains out of my price range even when marked down. Given my desire for a bargain, and propensity to stain/scuff/tear an item of clothing on the first wear, I'm quite sure that a Marc Jacobs court shoe will never end up on my floordrobe (but if I did somehow end up with a pair, I would love them and feed them and call them George). So no, I wont be in a Westfield fighting with teenagers over the last pair of skinny legs in a size 12; I'll be at Savers.

I have missed their previous sales due to work/illness/forgot, so this time around, I'm all over it. Doors open at 8am, and if you follow some simple advice, you should come out with a bag-load of bargains and minimal physical injury (please note: advice also valid for first-hand shops):

Attire

Comfy shoes, no laces. Today is NOT the day to test out your new ballet flats (bought in the pre-Christmas sales). If you're thinking of wearing boots, you're reading the wrong blog.
Flattering underwear. Go for a bra that will give you realistic cleavage (so you don't have to use your imagination), but will still support you and be comfy. Nickers. Go for a full brief, ladies; other people need to try those pants on after you.
An easy to throw on-and-off outfit. Don't be afraid to wear trackies (unless you are planning to hit DJs). I like a no-fuss dress that can be pulled on to minimise post-dressing room frizz from clothes whizzing past my head with alarming frequency.
Hair. Aim for something you can manage without looking like a cave woman after the first 10 minutes of frock-swapping.
Satchel bag, or something similarly hands-free. A green bag is good, as you can stuff it full of clothes as you go. And who cares? You're in trackies and have cave-woman hair anyway, right?

Provisions

Cash. It's a good way to limit yourself; just take what you are willing to spend. Also, if you only find one thing for $4.00... Then your'e not looking hard enough.
Credit Card. I'm not stupid - what if I find the shoes/dress/pants/wardrobe/lamp ALL IN THE SAME SHOPPING TRIP? I mean, what are the odds, right? It's always best to have a back up plan.
Power bar, sports drink, knowledge of nearby toilets. You could be in there a while. Go to the loo before you leave the house, then struggle, bags and all, to your emergency loo having held it in for the entire session (at least you'll know how those pants look when you're bloated)
Your sweetest smile. Being nice to the staff has never hurt anyone, and could result in a further discount.
Blue light. Just kidding.

Plan

Buy what you need. This is a common recommendation, and I'm only suggesting it to be socially responsible. Bugger it. I say go in, go nuts. You may not have realised that you needed a Santa-red shirt dress with an A-line skirt until you see it in your size for half price.

I love Christmas. I mean love. The tinsel, the presents, the food, the tree, the presents, the decorations, the presents, the cookies, the presents, the lights, the presents, the presents, the... Well, anyway. Every year, my husband makes a Christmas playmix and we drink sparkling red while I dance around the living room throwing tinsel over everything and he laughs with me (not wait, at). Good times! As I say, I love Christmas!

It is my first year at a new work place, so I asked about their Christmas decorations. I was a little deflated when I saw the rather underwhelming 30cm Christmas tree. I had to take action. But really, how much money do you really want to spend on stuff for work that the cranky cashier wont reimburse you for?

I decided $2.00 was reasonable. The decision was made at the Salvos on Sherrifs Road. Two bucks for a bag full of decorations - tinsel, baubles, weird Santas made in Japan that may scare small children... Awesome. I decorated the whole office; Christmas cheer for all! There are plenty of bags left at the store, filled with good quality, if a few quirky, Chrissy decs.

A little do-dad every op-shopper should own

I love a do-dad. Any nifty, gadgety, fits-in-your-pocket, blow-up, travel-sized whosit floats my boat, so I was pretty chuffed when I stumbled across a majigga that has already proved itself more valuable than Priceline gave it credit for (I found it on the bottom shelf, and that was only by accident). Let me first set the scene; provide a case study, if you will:

A 31 year old woman presents to an op shop on the hunt for work-appropriate-but-don't-mind-if-they-get-stained, good quality, cheaper than chips pair of pants. After breezing passed dresses, and stopping briefly to check for a business skirt, she settles in for a thorough rack-flick in the pants section (not to be confused with the jeans section). There are a few choice items, and she selects a handful of business pants ranging from size 10 to 14.

She enters the change room; some are too small (and muffin top is not an option), another pair far too big. And then there they are. A fantastic pair of black pants, with hip pockets and the perfect length for sensible work shoes. Ooh, nice on the bum, no pulling on the thighs. Sadly, they are just a little too loose in the waist, unable to 'hold it all in'. Half price and in perfect condition. What should she do?

Put them back? But they're almost perfect and half price. No hemming! No hemming!
Buy them? Wear them with a belt and endure the belt-bulge under knitted tops? Not an attractive option.

I'll go one better... Some clever person invented a thingy-whatsit that you thread through your back belt loop and clip to the ones on either side. It tightens your pants when a size up swims and a size below makes it difficult to eat comfortably.

Might I introduce you to the Hollywood Hip Hugger ($9.95) from the people who brought you such gems as Hollywood Fashion Tape and Hollywood Silicone Nipple Concealers (message me if you have actually tried these...). This little baby is so useful, I'm thinking about buying a back up. And the best bit? Ate too much? Feeling bloated? Nip into the loo, unclip it and store it in your pocket. Easier to conceal that a belt, more classy than unbuttoning the top of your duds. Give it a crack, just in time for Christmas (although take a tip from a chronic bloater - opt for a floaty frock at festive do's to avoid uncomfortable questions about the current state of your oven...).

Nice little do-flicker to ensure you don't have to pass on those awesome duds!

Bad manners

As mentioned once or twice, I have somewhat of a shopping habit. I guess it's like smoking - just one more wont hurt. Just one more op shop. On the way to a party. That I'm already late for. Ahem.

In my defence, I was only popping in to see if there was a suitcase for sale. It was right there, on the corner (my shame will be revealed at the end of this post, when I name the op shop I went to. If you are reading this, and I was on my way to your house, please remember that we have been friends for many years, and that I think you are the bees knees). So, given there probably weren't any parks outside their house, I parked in what I assumed was the nearest spot. You know. Out the front of the op shop.

And baby, late though I was, it paid off! Brand new Cue shift dress for 9.99? I'll take it! I also picked up a Cheekee overcoat - pink with a lovely pattern all over it - for $9.99. A two-tone dress from Barkins for $5.99 sealed the deal, and had me skipping down the road to the party (after stashing my goods in the car. It's bad enough rolling up late without rolling up late laden with sweet sweet treasures).

I only looked at the dresses, and happened to be passing by jackets on my way to home wares, so it's not like I dawdled. In fact, I didn't even try the items on (bloody lucky they fit!) so as not to waste precious time. Those of us in the know refer to this as speed shopping. Others might refer to it as a waste of time and money. But to those tight-wads, I ask this: can charity ever be a waste of time or money?

Dang. Dang dang dang! Half price at Savers 8am to 9pm. Where am I? On the couch in my PJs. DANG!

Fortunately, I had the good sense to stop off at the Red Cross on South Road on the way home. I had heard a rumour that there was a buy 2, get 2 free sale on (it's actually not that interesting: my mate posted on my FB wall). The sale had ended (dang, I say!), but there will still bargains to be had.

Next to the white shirt, dark denim and a leather jacket (note: leather, not suede), the wrap dress is one of those items countless magazines have told me is a wardrobe essential. As lame as that sounds, those items are pretty handy. It's a pain to find good versions, though, even in 'regular' shops, so when I find them in an op shop, well, I just have to snap them up.

And that's what I did today. Wrap dress half price, ta very much indeed. Surprisingly, it's a Supre dress; black with a lovely pattern of white flowers AND it covers my bum and boobs. See? Weird, right? I also scored a musk pink pussy bow shirt with little grey stars all over it. The red and white polka dot shirt with a Peter Pan collar filled the check out chick with delight when I presented it for purchase (she knows all the stock, and I think she likes to see things go to a good home. She also notices when I haven't been in for a while).

So no awesome sale, but the $2 racks are always worth a look, and they do have a half price rack up the back. I know I have mentioned their a-mazing (erm) Plus Size section, but for all you teeny-tinys out there, someone with a small bum and a big budget has handed over their collection, including a couple of gorgeous Review dresses in fantastic condition. And for the lads, the menswear section is getting bigger.

The store itself has had a bit of a makeover, and it's fantastic. The staff have done a wonderful job, and it is even more of a pleasure to shop in. And not a lime green suede jacket in sight. Unless I wasn't looking closely enough.

Online op shopping... What will they think of next?

So there I was, minding my own business, keeping my nose clean, staying away from the likes of Marion and other places that delight in parting me with my hard earned dough, when WHAM! Online op shop at my service! (well, I guess it's not a big surprise, given I googled online op shopping).

This isn't one of those pricey vintage sites where you just know that if you buy something one of two things will happen - 1) it wont bloody fit as 1950s sizing was created by tiny little goblins who didn't wear pants and as such didn't understand the complex relationship the bum has with the rest of the body, or 2) there's a hole in a spot that can't possibly be covered up with a brooch (no-one wants to see a nipple covered, Janet Jackson style). This site is simple to use, a little garish (sorry, but it's true), and reasonably priced. Usually, one of my key points when op shopping is to ensure fit, but hey - they had a half price sale, so I took a gamble. It kind of paid off.

I say kind of, because whilst in good nick, I think I made some bad choices. Wine + online shopping = WTF? when the postman arrives. So I am now the proud owner of a lime green suede biker jacket; great condition, fits quite well. It's just that it's lime green. Actually, no. It's more of a lime milkshake green. Yup. That baby's getting dyed at a cost twice what I paid.

I now have a pair of Dejuba pants, very nice, very classy, rather small... I am so sure I deleted them from my shopping cart, but let's not dismiss the role wine had to play in all this. For some reason, the sheer Supre shirt with a pussy bow seemed like the best idea since, well, a lime green biker jacket, and ended up in my cart (and subsequently, on the floordrobe). It's a lovely shirt, but I have a rule about buying second hand Supre and Valley Girl: you just bloody don't.

As for the one shoulder black dress by Dotti (brand new with tags, thanks very much)... Well, lets just say the Pump instructor and I are going to become fast friends. Fits fine, but the tuck shop lady arms kind of take away from the effect.

Possibly the strangest item I received in the post was the faux Louis Vuitton bag (yo - even with fake tags). I like fine things, but I think luxury items are kind of ridiculous, and fake ones even more so. I think the point is that you buy them to show off how much money you have. If you don't have much money, and you buy a fake one, then you're just a person with not much money and a fake Louis Vuitton. But this one is very cute, and, well. You know. Wine.

So should you give online op shopping a crack? The downside is, you miss out on trawling through racks and racks to find awesome items in a see of average (bit like shopping at Marion, only more musty and less expensive). You also have to pay for postage, although it's quite reasonable. I'm sure there are times when there's a special on shipping.

On the plus side, there were some good quality clothes in excellent condition, and the prices are very reasonable. Just heed my advice: save the wine until after you have opened your Paypal account. Lime green. Really? I'm just gonna have to rock that baby this weekend to prove a point.

Puppy likes the new bag. Might see if he likes the jacket, too.

Time to brag

And I mean brag. In an effort to tame my somewhat out-of-control shopping habit (I say somewhat, because when you only spend 50c on a top, it's not exactly time for an intervention), I have allowed myself only one day a week where I shop (shut up). So I need to make it a good one. Have you heard of people saving seats, saving treats, saving a fancy bottle of wine? I save op shops.

If you are mad-keen OSS reader (yep, I did that), then you would already know about my love for the Darlington Salvos. You may also recall that when I worked in my last (hideously stressful) job, I would frequent this Salvos on the way home, often rushing in at 5.15pm for a power shop to ease the pain. Those days are long behind me, so I haven't been to Darlington Salvos for quite a while; I've been saving it up. And boy was it worth it!

Skip to the pictures if you don't want to experience searing envy (there's only a few, and they don't do my pretties justice. I really do need that new camera, thanks Santa).

Where should I start? Maybe with menswear, since I rarely mention it (sorry, dudes). I picked up a just-bought-for-my-mate's-wedding-coz-the-bride-insisted-on-matching-shoes-that-I-would-never-normally-wear-but-she-was-scary-so-I-did-as-I-was-told pair of patent pleather Zu shoes with a few easy-to-clean water marks courtesy of the obligatory Botanic Gardens photos, I'm sure. Only $9.99 and in excellent condition. I even gave them a wiff to make sure they were okay. Now that's love.

Enough of that. Now on to the dresses: Hello, Sportscraft silk dress. Why, look at what wonderful condition you are in! I'll be you were only worn once. Well, I suppose I can hand over $14.99 to give you a new home.

Alright, I'll spare you the conversations I had with inanimate objects and just give you a brief rundown:

Navy blue, silk (you know it) shirt dress $9.99 - I think my tan heels and maybe a cuff of some description will do it justice. It has a tie belt, but I also picked up a nice, thin brown one for $1.99.

Target shift dress in browns $9.99 - for work, naturally, so probably ballet flats and a cardie... Don't want to be too Mad Men in the lab by wearing it with heels.

Pale yellow Bauhaus summer dress with lovely croche detail for $4.99 - I have some big, white wooden beads that will go just nicely.

Sheer, forties-style navy blue shift by Tokito with shirring and self-stripe for $6.99 - Pencil skirt. Need I say more?

(Take a breathe, there's still more) A maroon croched jumper with lovely scalloped hems (clearly handmade with love) for $6.99 - smashing with ye olde blue jeans and tan wedges.

A boring gym top, but needs must, for $4.99 - um. Trackies.

And finally, a Just Jeans blue and white striped onesie. Yep. Onesie. I bloody love them as PJs in summer.

So there you have it. Money well-spent and my philanthropic duty fulfilled for the week (just don't add it up... Although if you do, remember that work clothes don't count).

I think it's a great idea, but I'm a little confused about the motivation. I suspected it was two-fold: sustainability and, well, boosting Salvos profits (hey - not as sinister as it sounds. They are a charity!). But after doing a little reading (by which I mean googling), I discovered that it "is about seeing the value in existing stuff and reflects a growing movement of people switching off from shopping and turning to life" (Donald Munro, Salvos Stores Sustainability Manager).

Hmm. But it got me to thinking: what are the real motivations for op shopping? Lets see. Well, there's the sustainability argument: buy second hand"reduce your carbon footprint"save the world. There's the charity angle (and you know I love this one): buy pre-loved"donate to charity (not tax deductible, by the way)"save the world. There's the champagne lifestyle on a beer budget take: sneakily drape yourself in high street labels without revealing your less-than-impressive payslip"save the world. Of course, the bragging rights can actually be really fun: bag a bargain"brag to your mates"save the world.

But I think for most people, it's a combination of all of those. If you are still dipping your toe into op shopping, there's a sale that can help you fulfil each and every excuse - er, reason - for dropping some coin on some pre-loved garb this weekend. A few weeks ago, I posted about the temporary MOSH store on Port Road near the Entertainment Centre. Well, lucky for us, they have so much stock that it's still open, and will be for a little while longer. And the best news... At the moment, they have that wonderful but rare nugget of op shopping delight: FILL A BAG FOR $5.00!

I love my sister. She's clever, interesting, funny and... impulsive. On Saturday, we were heading to a family do across town, making great time. Now, we both subscribe to the idea that rolling up bang on time to any event is naff, and it's far more beneficial to arrive a little late, after the early comers have warmed the place up for us. I'm not talking 3 hours late, just about 30 minutes, when it doesn't occur to anyone that you're late. If you roll up after cake and speeches, you've missed the point of the exercise. By that stage everyone is drunk and emotional and you have to play catch up. Before you know it, you've surpassed all of the guests and find yourself slow dancing with a glass of warm champagne on a tabletop and crying to yourself while well-meaning friends try to coax you down with chocolate and the promise of a hug. Not that I have ever done that.

So there we were, humming down Main North Road in a tiny 3-cylinder when all of a sudden there's a cry of "OP SHOP!!" and much to the surprise of the soccer mum bearing down on us (in a car that can only be described as an urban tank), my sister hit the breaks and screamed into a non-descript collection of shops. I was disorentated for a moment, and more than a little dazed by our near-death experience before I saw it, crammed between Aussie Muscle and a pet store: In Vogue Op Shop.

I didn't hold out much hope. A tiny nanna op shop in the heart of the North? Not exactly going to be a gold mine, right? Wrong! Helloooooo, Nanna!

You have to love a shop that has carefully labelled baskets: "Tupperware", "Kitchenware", "Rollerblades"... It's a sweet store with some sweet treasures. I picked up a beautiful, crisp white shirt by Basque for $8.00 with strategically-placed pleats that make me look a size smaller, as well as a great little 50's style skirt - purple with little white polka dots for $4.00. Very Stepford Wives. But just in case I was getting a little too girly and pretty, I also bought an awesome pair of slouchy ankle boots with buckles x3 for $5.00 (as new).

My sister scored nicely: a blue and white striped Miss Shop dress, a funky vertical striped number (blast! Got to those before I did!) and a lovely pink and yellow dip-dyed blouse. The best bargain of the day was her Harry Who business skirt with the $250 tag still on it for $3.00. Yes, $3.00. I know.

If you are interested, there's still a lovely white Veronika Maine shirt with pin-tuck detail for $8.00 that didn't suit me or my sister. This act is in line with the 11th Op Shopping Commandment is never buy something for the hell of it. Remember that there is someone else out there who will fit it perfectly, and it will make their day when the find it. Alls fair in love and shopping, after all.

Whilst I wouldn't recommend a trip into the deep north for an op-shopping spree, if you happen to be on that side of town, drop into this great little nanna op shop.

This is not a drill/joke/delusion! Now, I like me some Target, don't mind fessing up to a Kmart buy, and do enjoy the odd Sparkles binge (Adelaide girls, you know what I'm on about), but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little keen on designer wear. But when you want champagne but have a tap-water budget, what are you supposed to do? Why, hit the op shops in the more comfortable suburbs in the hope that there's a little champagne left in the bottle... (have I taken this analogy too far?).

As my friend so sweetly put it the other day: "Ah, thank God for people who put on weight and can't fit into their old clothes". I like to take it a little further: "Thank God for people who go shopping, put in weight and can't fit into their new clothes". That's how I ended I up with a brand new pair of black boot cut CK's on my laundry floor! Now to stay exactly the same shape so I never have to part with them...

As I was indulging my love of all things that in the real world I would never buy, I also found a sweet dark blue, sequined singlet by Saba. I think it will go nicely with my new jeans (I didn't test this idea in the change room, as I was on my third turn in there).

And if you love handbags that your mum or gran would have toted around in their fashionable years before you came along and ruined their fun, the Hawthrone Salvos is the place to go. When I was there (you know, buying designer jeans), I noticed quite a selection of 60's and 70's handbags in good nick. I decided to pass up on them, as I a) have trouble using the bags I already have, and b) am running out of places to store them (just so you know, I had a space in my pants drawer big enough for one more pair... With a little encouragement). But my loss is your gain, so go nuts (also, I'm sure you could always lend me one).

I bought a few other things, but since you're grabbing your keys to head to Mitcham, I'll leave it at that. Designer jeans all in the name of charity? You better believe it!

Size 16 or over? Time to raid the schrappers jar!

There has to be a nicer, and less ridiculous term, than "Plus Size". Anyway, if you wear a size 16 or over, head to the Red Cross Store on South Road in St Marys; they have a great range - I'm talking the front part of the store. Dresses, tops, bottoms... And very little of it is Millers (you know what I'm talking about!). Even if you aren't a size 16, check it out. As we can all attest, the size on the label doesn't always match the size of your butt.

Actually, I'm an advocate of giving every section in an op shop a buzz. We went to an engagement party on the weekend and I wore a dress I found in the kids' section at the Darlington Salvos. It fits like a glove, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm not a tiny little waif, so it was quite a find. I always check out the (ugh, here goes) "Plus sizes" and even dedicate a little time to menswear (thinking of myself, not the husband, but occasionally I find a little something for him).

On menswear, if you are looking for old skool Van Heusen, this one is your store. The sizes vary, but they have a decent menswear section. There is also about 3 racks of vintage/retro clothing. It's mostly polyester, but who doesn't love a swish while they walk? And it seems to be in really good condition. I had to pass over a red and white cropped jacket that, had it fit, I would have worn with a white singlet, dark denim and hmmmm ballet flats or heels? Either would have worked. *sigh*

After an hour and a lot of umming and ahhing, I settled on a grey Target pencil skirt and wide-legged Jacqui E pants. For work, you see.

Head to this Red Cross store for menswear, work wear, new and second hand accessories (including a lovely selection of scarves and handbags) and retro/vintage. Oh. And. You know. Ahem.

Like an op shop in my house and everyone's invited!

A couple of times a year, my lounge room floor becomes frenzy of excited women clawing through their friend's "love it but over it" clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, and (recently added) books and homewares.... Actually, it's not as cut-throat as that. In fact, it's lovely and fun. Let me lay down the process, including the all-important rules of a Clothes Swapping Party.

Venue
You'll need enough space for your mates to fit around the 6 piles (knitwear, skirts, dresses, jackets, pants, tops) plus a shoes/accessory section. They only need to shimmy around the edge of glory (hi there, Lady Ga Ga). I've held these in a tiny apartment that you could barely shimmy around at the best of times! Be prepared to move furniture and don't forget to vaccum thoroughly unless you want your guests picking fluff (and worse!) off their new knitwear. You also need a room or two where people can try things on in front of a full length mirror. Unless you are all happy to try things on in front of your mates and have them let you know how it looks...

Food
Wine and chocolate. Oh, and low fat dips with veggie sticks. Chances are most people are on a diet that requires them to squash their chocolate-guilt with healthy snacks before they can go back for more chocolate. And if you have any friends who can bake delicious cookies and muffins (you know who you are, ladies), exploit them. You'll be busy enough with all the vacuuming and crudite-ing. Take the help where it's offered.

Rules
The rules are very important and as the host you need to enforce them (followed by passing over some chocolate):

Everyone must bring at least 3 items to swap (as mentioned above).
No-one can complain about their weight, size of their bum, how thundering their thighs are, how much they have preggers belly... Firstly, it's irritating. Secondly, please a size 8 complaining to a size 14? Bugger off! Remember that everyone has their hang ups, but you're all gorgeous, so you can keep it to yourselves!
First in, first serve.
Everyone needs to wait until all guests have arrived (although if someone is coming an hour or so late, don't hold off) and all of the clothes are laid out in their piles. No dibs. No cherry-picking before the starter gun goes off. Fairs fair.

Hosting

It's your job to see that people know where items go, that everyone has a drink and some snacks within reach, and that all parties have been properly introduced (don't include dress size, that's just rude). Chances are you'll have people from all areas of your life coming together to experience the Swap, so make sure everyone is comfortable. It's also your job to signal the start. I usually cry out: "Dig in, ladies!" and it's on. Sometimes you'll have to make the first move, but given you would have already sussed out where you want to start, this wont be hard.

The Wrap Up

Once everyone has been in and out of the "change room(s)" 2 or 3 times, the party starts to slow, with a dedicated few going back for a fourth and fifth time. This is the time to designate one person to hold up each piece for a final group-viewing and another person to put the unwanted items in bags for your local op shop. Pick someone who isn't shy and has a good eye for what suits others. She also needs to strike a balance between jovial and forceful (eg "Who wants this pink top? Ali, you can have that. No. Go and try it on! It'll look lovely!"). This is also the point when people who didn't jump in with the rest of us at the beginning score!

So there you have it. The most fun you can have for free. And there is something lovely about seeing an old favourite go to someone who you know will love it. Until the next Clothes Swapping Party, that is...

A Tale of Two Sales

There are a couple of great things going on around the place this weekend... Like the temporary MOSH Bargain Shop that's popped up in Hindmarsh full of amazing buys, and the Annual Vintage Fashion Fair in Burnside with such fine vintage items that you'll want to weep and dance and laugh all at once.

For those of you who love getting extra bang for your buck, head to the temporary MOSH store on Port Road (near the Entertainment Centre) for super bargains! For the next 3 weekends the place will be packed to the gills with quality secondhand clothing starting from $1.00 per piece. You've heard me bang on about the awesome things I have bought there (hello, black Country Road dress for $2.00 that I wore last week and spent the day fending off compliments), so why not dive in and see what you find? There's so much you'll only come up for air long enough to cry out: "It's for charity, after all!!"

The MOSH Bargain Store is at 95 Port Road Hindmarsh and is open Saturdays and Sundays 26 & 27 August, 3 & 4 September and 10 & 11 September 9am-4pm.

Frolic amongst beautiful frocks and accessories from the time of hats and gloves and maybe buy yourself something lovely for a Sunday picnic. It's not cheap, but you wont mind, given the quality and rarity of these pieces. Haircut + Red Cross = Happiness!

Whenever I have my haircut, I strut out of the hairdresser, feelin' sassy, make a left and head into Red Threads. This is a beautifully outfitted Red Cross store with a fantastic mix of second hand and new, and never fails to part me from my hard-earned. Today was no exception...

I bought a sweet little black skirt that's all puffy and cute and has such lovely buttons that I'll have to tuck any top into it to show them off. Did not mind handing over $7.50 for that little number, let me tell you! There was a gorgeous rose-print Portmans dress that I carried around for about 1/2 an hour before I had to concede that, sweet as it was, just wasn't my cup of tea. Size 10, forgiving, and only $16.00., if you're interested.

This afternoon when I dressed to go out, I couldn't quite find anything to work with my outfit, but was running late for my haircut, so I had to whip out the door slightly dissatisfied. Fortunately for me, there was a (new) sweet stone and rope necklace that was just perfect. It looked so much better than what I was wearing when I left the house that my husband noticed immediately. That's what I get for trying to smuggle a new purchase by wearing it. Necklace: $20.00. Husband looking up from the computer to pay a compliment: Priceless.

This op shop is also a great place to pick up a present. If you aren't keen on giving someone a pre-loved item, there are plenty of brand new handbags, gloves, clutches and jewellery, as well as clothes. I picked up a present for a friend we'll be staying with soon. A (new) cropped bronze, white and black sequinned jacket is a better hostess gift than a bottle of wine any day!

The camera is still missing (which means I haven't done any housework) but we're having people over soon, which means we have to clean the house, so I'm sure it will turn up...

Not being able to find my camera is no excuse not to go op-shopping...

Have you ever been to the Friends of the Repat op shop? It's been there for as long as the hospital, and is a true nanna-store in every sense of the word. It's run by a dedicated bunch of vollies, and packed with a collection of bric-a-brac, books, clothing and haberdashery... You will need to muster your patience and stay the course, because you will find something that will make you want to part with your shrapnel.

The other day I picked up 2 lovely 50s sauce jugs for $2 (small) and $3 (large), because apparently you can never have too many. I bought my sister some hand-painted floral earrings for $2 (note: always clean earrings carefully with alcohol swabs before use), as well as a lovely black and red beaded necklace for $2 that I convinced my self comes under the category of work ware (don't ask). Oh, and a lovely dark blue wrap shirt with white pinstripes that I didn't bother trying on for $4... Oops, my bad. That'll go on the pile at the clothes swap. It's a gorgous shirt, but it was not a good fit or cut for me.

Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

Red Cross Store Sale!

Since we had to cancel the town trip so I wouldn't spread my cooties to a pregnant lady, I headed home after work... via the Red Cross Store on South Road (I was only a bit sick but I couldn't risk it!). I've lost my camera (under a pile of clothes, no doubt), so you'll have to enjoy the story without visual aids, I'm afraid.

It had to be a power shop, as they close at 5pm and it was already 4.45. Not the safest way to shop - at the end of the week, in a rush, and with a crisp $50.00 in my beaded love heart-shaped purse (well, scrunched up a little, to be honest). First stop was the 1/2 price rack outside, where I found a nice grey and pink striped cardigan (apparently I love cardigans!) for $4.00. I couldn't resist a white jumper with a picture of a donkey on it with the words "c'est un idiot" which I'm pretty sure translates to "is an idiot" (by all means correct me if I'm wrong, please!). Drôle, oui?

The staff at this store are really lovely, so when I came in the first thing they told me was, "We close in 15 minutes", followed by, "Grab a string bag and fill it from those 3 tables for $20.00". Well, anyone who knows me knows I love a challenge...

I'll spare you the long list of what I managed to stuff into the bag, but I will tell you this: the items on the tables are excellent quality, and mostly winter clothes such as jackets and jumpers, as well as shirts and tops. And the ladies don't mind if you fill it to the brim! All sizes and styles, too.

The staff aren't sure how long the sale tables will last - a couple of weeks, maybe - so take my advice and head in there this weekend and fill up a bag with goodies! Try to get there in plenty of time so you can go through the whole place, which is massive!!!

Super-frugality

I'm on a self-imposed shopping ban this week. And by "this week" I mean working-week, so come Friday 4pm, it's off to Rundle Mall (hello Anglicare and/or Red Cross store. I say "and/or' because the main aim of the trip into town is to help my mate buy boots). I'm trying to make up for the bargain hunting in Melbs last week, you see. Also, my ever-patient husband may one day run out of patience if I don't check myself occasionally.

So in the interest of super-frugality, I'll take this opportunity to tell you about my favourite Nanna Store. When I worked in my previous job, which was mind-blowingly stressful and difficult, I would sneak down to this op shop on my bimonthly-lunch break* and relieve my stress by power-shopping this little treasure trove.

Just for the record, I am less a frugalist and more a bargain hunter. A frugalist buys only what they need, and lives by the phrase, "It's only a bargain if you need it" (pfft). A bargain hunter lives by the following phrases: for new items: "Oh my God! 70% off!"; for op shops: "And the profits go to charity!". Need doesn't enter into it, and nor should it, I say. But for the sake of argument, I'll say I'm being super-frugal by not not shopping today, but rather telling you about something I bought last month.

I discovered the Hare Street Uniting Church (Nanna) Op Shop a long time ago, back when I was a student living on bugger all. We lost touch after I started a big person's job in the city and a big person's pay packet (not that I stopped op shopping), but a few years ago I started working in the Ashford area. And thar she was, as beautiful and as cheap as the day we first met. Since our reunion, I have swooped in more often than I can count. The ladies are really lovely and the clothes, although not a huge collection, are generally in good condition and sectioned into both type and size. There is a great book section (mix of things you wanna read for leisure, and things you wanna read to chuckle at), and there can be some fantastic jewellery. Oh, and if you love a nick nack, Nanna can hook you up.

Last time I zipped in, I bought a fantastic pair of high waisted, skinny leg Colette jeans for $5.00. They are in perfect condition, no fading or damage, and fit like a dream, which is lucky, as I didn't have time to try them on. So far I have worn them under boots, with cardies, jumpers, ballet flats, booties, shirts tucked in, shirts un-tucked... Versatile, kinda sexy, and let me tell you, they magic my arse into something quite special. Ass-wiggling fun for just 5 bucks. Winner.

I also picked up an oversized, grey and blue argyle cardigan that comes down to my knees. It wasn't made for little ladies, but I think it works well with the aforementioned jeans, ballet flats and a beanie and scarf, or chucked over the top of a plain black jersey maxi dress (I have 2 black ones - one from an op shop - that I swear by for comfy-but-neater-than-trackies).

So there you have it. Frugality. Check. Awesome jeans. Check. Comfy cardie. Check. Thanks, Nannas. Keep up the good work!

Sulking on Sunday

Good times on Saturday night (Gomez gig! Spa! Champagne! Chocolate espresso moussey puddlingy thing! Lovely!) lead to a lazy Sunday morning wandering through town, where to my distress (yes - distress) we stumbled across 2 CLOSED opshops - the new Anglicare store on the corner of King William St and Hindley St, and the Red Cross on the east end of Rundle St across(ish) from the Stag.

The Anglicare store is only open Monday-Friday, which means I wont be going there any time soon. The thing about city op shops is they often have awesome clothes in great condition (yes, Whitmore Square Salvos, I'm talking about you). You know the old adage: "The better the suburb, the better the haul" (I made that up. It's not very old). This one boasts that it only stocks designer and high end brands, so if you wanna look schmick for cheap, I guess this is your place. When I finally get there, I'll let you now how it is.

I didn't even cross the road from Eros to check out when the Red Cross store is open. I was too sad. And kind of full from my green eggs and ham. They were really really tasty. Had I bothered to cross the road, I would have discovered it's actually open on Sundays. Bum.

We passed a cute little store on Rundle St that I'm pretty sure used to be the great vintage store, the Little Shop of Treasures (a lifetime ago). It's now Clothes Line Saga, which stocks new and pre-loved clothing for super cool people. Well, that's what I got from their FB page. They don't let people like me in places like that. Also, it was closed.

I sulked for a bit, then went into kikki.K and Smiggle and was happy again. Not op-shopping, but stationary-love can fill the void as required. It's kind of like work clothes: necessary so doesn't count.

I have a new favourite street in Melbourne. It used to be Acland St, mainly for the cake shops and Quick Brown Fox (QBF). I also love Degraves St, filled with cool-as cafes where the staff happily cruise around in holy jumpers and navel-revealing t-shirts (except The Quarter - best brekkie on Degraves, no navels) , and the cutest cupcake store (Little Cupcakes) where you can buy a mini cake and a coffee for $4.90. Guilt-free pleasure right there (subscribing to the philosophy that if it weighs 30g or less the calories don't count. Included in this group are Lindt balls, Milky Ways and belts of scotch).

Little Collins Street and Flinders Lane give me a sense of satisfaction: I can leave a shop without buying anything (hello, Scanlan and Theodore) and get a workout (why the hell did they build Melbourne on a hill?).

Last time I went to Melbs, we spent most of our time at the beachside glory of St Kilda. This time, I headed north to hunt down a few op shops I had read about online. After the uphill battle getting from Spencer St to Albert St (I was forced to stop in several little arcades and laneways for sustenance and rack-flicking), I found myself at the top of Smith St. In hindsight, I should have given myself way more time. Had I known about Lost and Found I would have dedicated an entire day to it.

Lost and Found is one of a few market-style stores along Smith St, but by far the best. It’s filled with 3 levels of all sorts of treats and treasures. Each section is “owned” by one person, but the only thing that gives it away is the different tags. The prices are similar, and the flow is uninterrupted. There’s only one counter, which helps make it feel like one store. If I hadn’t spent all of my money on the way there (damn you, tiny boutique stores) I would have bought more than 2 numbered tiles (3 Clubs and Ace Spades) and a lovely, bright orange scarf covered in butterflies (not sure what I'll wear it with, but look how pretty it is!). That didn’t stop me from spending over an hour looking at all the stalls filled with racks of vintage clothes, shelves of old books, stacks of old furniture and piles and piles of bags, shoes, scarves…

Given I was on the hunt for the St Marks Op Shop at number 298, and I was at number 12, I tore myself away… Only to be distracted by more cute vintage shops and a boutique I had to enter, given its name: Release the Hounds (hello, Friends of Couture wrap dress on sale. Come home with me and live in my Floordrobe). By about 5pm I was ready for a snack and sit down, and found myself in a tiny little bar drinking cider (yes, honey, I lied) and eating beetroot and mint dip. After 15 minutes of staring into space, I realized I was staring right at another vintage store... which was closing. I did contemplate skulling my cider, stuffing my mouth with pide and running over to check it out for the last 15 minutes, but thought better of it. It could easily have resulted in a nasty tummy ache and the purchase of a hot pink jumpsuit. Probably a good thing I stayed put.

With a full belly and cider-head, I wandered off for a tram and just happened to find Nook Vintage. It's a mix of furniture, vintage clothing and other bits and bobs. Luckily I found something to buy. Luckily it was a little red dove brooch and not a chair. Luckily it was only $6.00. Luckily it matched the outfit I was wearing. Luckily I didn't miss my tram and was back at the hotel in time for dinner. Phew. Sweet relief.

Arcade Fire - August 4

Somewhere between breakfast and lunch, I decided that Bridge Road was a bad idea. More specifically, somewhere after a vintage store called Retrostar and a boutique called Twisted in Oz, each nestled in a couple of Melbourne’s many nooks and crannies.

I have been to Retrostar once before, a very long time ago, when it was located in a smaller store. It was in our early days as a couple, when I would have been more conscious of leaving him standing on the side of the road with only a cold coffee for company while I did some serious rack-flicking. These days, I just head to Melbourne on my own…

I was happy to stumble across it again. Retrostar is huge. There are the usual suspects: polyester pussy bow shirts, velvet jackets and etched leather satchels. And dresses. Racks and racks of those polyester, elastic-waisted house dresses from the 60s and 70s in so many colours and patterns. You know the ones: there are about a billion reproductions by Temt and Dotti floating around every teenage girl at the moment. I found a fantastic cornflower blue one with a William Morris-esque pattern of daffodils, but decided against it. $25.00, needed a slip and made from the worlds most uncomfortable fabric… Maybe if it was $10.00. I enjoyed flicking through the polyester dream, but the real fun came when I stumbled across the 50’s section filled with brochade and glitter-thread. I settled on a “goal dress” (a term I’m stealing from one of MOSH’s customers) – a mid-blue and white rose patterned frock from the 50’s with a tight boat-necked bodice and a flared skirt. The photo below doesn't do it justice. The thought of it literally made me walk out of Krispy Kreame Donuts empty-handed. $49.00 for a dress that doesn’t (yet) fit is a little pricy, but, as with all of the items in Retrostar, it’s in excellent condition and, well, it’s just really, really pretty.

I also bought a super-cute, double breasted pink pin-striped shirt. It sounds sort of ridiculous, so have a look at the picture below and you’ll see what I mean. It was ½ price down from $45.00. Again, more than I would usually pay for a second hand shirt, but I was on holidays and had leftovers waiting in the hotel room fridge for dinner. That’s not quite as good as the proceeds going to charity, but it does mean what I saved on dinner I could spend on a brand new (to me) second hand shirt. Something like that, anyway.

Harry Wragg was an interesting mix of retro/vintage clothing and new accessories, some of which are made by local designers. Cute, but nothing really made me want to part with my hard-earned. Tell you what, though, if you need a fur or a crazy-printed shirt, Harry's your man!

August 3 - Old Golden Face

My main aim of the day was checking out Ol’ Golden Face’s (Tutankhamen) collection of treats from his tomb, but I still managed to keep the faith and find the Royal Arcade’s Brotherhood of St Lawrence op shop (in the basement). I also hunted down the Burke St Salvos, only to find that it was having a grand re-opening in 11 day’s time. No sign on the door as to where I could find an alternative, either. What if it was an emergency?

The Brotherhood of St Lawrence has 27 shops around Melbourne and its surrounds but despite their chain-store status, the one in the Royal Arcade was pretty nanna. There were some lovely dresses, but since I like, you know, eating and stuff, I had to pass. I still managed to find a few things, mainly work attire (that old excuse again...): a mint green knit vest with a cute diamond pattern with the tag still attached. Thanks, Veronica, whoever you are. A cherry-red Portmans knit vest put a smile on my face, and goes very well with my new red-and-white striped Zara shirt (I tested it in my hotel room). Add a pair of slacks (black Cue from MOSH - see previous post) and I’m sorted for my first day of work on Monday. I couldn’t walk past the last piece I bought: a pale grey t-shirt printed with black braces and a red-and-white polka dot bow tie. Classic. All that joy for $17.00; slightly more than I normally like to pay, but this was a Melbourne city op shop, so I let it slide and handed over the cash. It is for charity, after all.

August 2 - Ideal Day

If I was to describe to you my ideal day, it wouldn't be too far off today. Free run of the back room of an op shop, a “name your price” policy, and the freedom to rearrange the shop as I see fit... Wait. That’s exactly what I did, so I guess today at the MOSH House op shop was my ideal day!

After helping mum set the store up, I headed out the back to sort through the bags and boxes of clothes. One word: SCORE! Witchery, New Look (UK), Sussan, Sportsgirl, Country Road… As I picked things out for the store, I found some choice numbers for myself (one for the shop, one for me, one for the shop, one for me… Bit like when I cook with wine…). I’ll add some pics of what I bought, but needless to say, I had to sneak them past the husband. Don’t get me wrong – he has a point. I have my own room filled with clothes (one pet name he gave it is The Floordrobe), and it really was too many things to buy in one hit, but when I explain how little I paid, and what great condition they are in, no-one could blame me!

Once I had picked out some great things for the store, mum and I went through what was already on offer. There were 2 $2.00 racks, 2 $1.00 boxes, 2 “prices as marked” rack and a shoe shelf. By the time we finished, there was a 20c and 50c basket, a $1.00 rack, a $2.00 rack, 2 “prices as marked”, a pants section and a kid’s section. I’d put outfits together and hung them out the front, and placed the heels in two sections so you can see them all.

I need to go back and play in there some more; it was so much fun! I even strategically showed mum a dress in front of a lady who I thought would like it… SOLD! Such fun. As for my little winners, I only paid $20.00 for the lot (including a couple of books). That was mates rates, but with the most expensive item a pair of as-knew Levis 560’s at $8.00 (size 10 if you are interested), I’m pretty sure you’ll walk out with armfuls of bargains, too. Tomorrow I'm heading to the MOSH Op Shop in Thebarton. MOSH (Minimisation of Suicide Harm) is a fantastic organisation founded and run by people dedicated to raising awareness of suicide prevention and bereavement support.

MOSH House is the home of a cute, well organised and super-cheap op shop filled with quality clothes, shoes, bags and bric-a-brac. The other part of the house is a place for people who's lives have been effected by suicide to go for understanding and support. Successful Op-Shopping (Part 2)

So now you are up to trying things on, and deciding if you really need (need??) another skirt, although this one is slightly different from your others and only $2.99....

The Tough-Decision Rules

Until you are seasoned shopper who can whip into any store for 15 minutes and fly out with pure op-shopping gold, you need to try everything on. Try to sneak past the eagle-eyed nannas into the change room with 15 items, and don't think about the poor bugger waiting to try on their 2 tops after you. When there's a line because some inconsiderate person has gone in with more than 4 items, I do the Mum Trick and just try things on over what I am wearing (I've been known to do it in department stores, too. You hit 30 and suddenly all those things mum used to do that embarrassed me are awesome, time-saving ideas). If it doesn't fit, don't buy it. I don't care if you have just joined the gym, or are on a cleanse. Put that lovely skirt back, because sometime soon, someone is going to come into that shop and find it fits perfectly, and they'll look lovely, and they'll be so happy, and the skirt will get a second, exciting life. Shoved at the back of your closet is not the second life any skirt dreams of. Oh, and cleanses always end. Always.
Once you have decided on the 2 items out of 15 you have just tried on, it's time to give them a thorough going-over. Check the whole garment (back, hems, lining, arms) for any stains. I'm not talking a giant blob of curry sauce; I would hope you didn't even try that one on. This check is for those subtle little stains from a drop of salad dressing or a swipe of a texta. Fail to honour this step, and you'll find yourself with an unwearable dud and $5.00 worse off. Stained? Can't save it with a strategically placed brooch? Sard's not gonna rescue it? Back it goes.
When you're in the change room, you have the opportunity to give it the Wiff Test without offending anyone. Let's face it, stinky clothes and bags are a risk, although really only in the tiny, nanna church hall shops. If it smells like cigarette smoke or a billion moth balls, put it back. Nothing gets that reek out (a hint of moth ball is acceptable, but remember to wash twice and air for a week. Seriously).
You're close to purchase now. Time to do the ol' Put Back. Stand just shy of the register and give everything a final once-over. Will you really wear a leather-paneled skirt? What about an over-sized argyle grandpa cardie (which by the way, I do, and it's lovely)? Do you just like that you can buy a t-shirt for 20c?
Finally, price. Eyeball what you have in your arms. Is $14.99 too much for a second-hand Target dress, or are you staring at a silk Portmans number that has only been worn once? Weigh it up. It is, after all, pre-loved. If you are having trouble justifying it, you can always use the charity line: "Okay, it's a little more than I'd like to pay, but it does go to charity...". That usually gets me over the line.

Successful Op-Shopping (Part One)

Take heed! Here is your guide to Successful Op-Shopping...

Pick half a day and someone you trust who isn't your size and/or doesn't share your taste but can appreciate it.
If you have been roped into an op shopping expedition, have fun with it. There is nothing worse than shopping with some one who isn't into it. They suck all the fun outta the place and you end up rushing through (see rule 8).
Work out which 3 op shops you'll hit. Have another 2 as a back up just in case you still have energy or there was a dud (this can happen, although it's rare if you follow my rules). Make sure they're all within a 10 minute drive of each other and be sure to check closing times. For a Saturday Op Shop-fest, I like to start with a Save the Children (closes at 12pm) and end on a Salvos (closes at 5pm).
Plan coffee and lunch breaks to ensure hunger doesn't dampen your momentum. An expedition like this requires a high level of commitment and caffeine.
Wear slip on shoes, easily removable skirt or pants, a fitted top and a jumper or jacket you can carry comfortably without compromising clothes-carrying ability. A satchel is the best bag, or a roomy green bag. You can stuff things in and hang clothes on it so you can keep your hands free for the important stuff.
Have a vague idea of what you are looking for, so you have a starting point. If you go in blind you'll be overwhelmed (especially in somewhere like Savers) and end up flicking through the $1 rack at the front, have your spirits dampened and head home in a sulk.
Take your time. I'm talking at least an hour per shop (2 hours for Savers). Start on one rack, such as dresses, and pick through each item. Like it? Pull it out for further inspection later (Rule 12), and carry on until you are weighed down by a mass of cut and fabric. Look at least 2 sizes above your own and 2 below. If your tiny, your 2 sizes below will include the kids section.
Shoes. This is a contentious issue. They almost deserve their own list of rules, but let me just say this: they must fit, the heel must be in good condition, and you must be able to clean the inside thoroughly enough that you don't get the creeps every time you go to put them on.
Underwear/swimwear. Unless it's a vintage slip or swimwear that still has the tags on (or that little vag-sticker), don't go there.

The Salvos on Broadway has had it's ups and downs: great prices, great clothes; great prices, bad clothes; bad prices, great clothes... Things have come full circle, and Simba is rejoicing. We're back to great clothes, great prices.

Just the other day, I picked up a stunning Cue off-white mini with a flattering waste-band and strategic draping for $8.99 (perfect condition, of course). Since one skirt didn't seem like enough, I nabbed a blue and white striped Esprit skirt: nice and nautical, all for $4.99.

I also scored a taupe Sussan cropped swing jacket with 3/4 sleeves for $8.99, which got it's first run tonight with straight-legged jeans, a red and white striped top and red and white striped ballet flats.

Saturday's advice: skip the matinee and head to the Salvos on Broadway at Glenelg. Oh, and always one final stain-check before you seal the deal. I nearly parted with my hard-earned cash for a sweet little shift dress with a stain on it.

My lovely big sister has feet 1/2 a size smaller than mine, which means if one of us gets some shoes that don't quite fit, the other benefits.

Say hello to these little lovelies that are a tiny bit too big for her, but fit me quite nicely, thank you very much!

Hot pink, peeptoe corked wedges with big bows... Think I'll tuck a yellow tank into my black skater skirt, throw on my turquoise cardie and strut around in these little babies...

Sale Fail

I had planned to head to the 50% off sale at Savers today, but life got in the way so I thought I'd reminisce about past glories...

Recently I ventured out to Savers with my friend and her band new, super cute bubs with the aim to do some post-baby shopping for her. I was there purely as support, you see...

And support her I did, by buying myself a super cute red shirt with white polka dots for $6.99 (no brand but in great nick). As my friendship knows no bounds, I also helped out by buying a lovely Kookai white woolen cardie and a grey Katies pencil skirt, adding to my work wardrobe (read: new excuse for buying clothes).

Oh, and 2 pairs of clip-on earrings for $1.99 each. Nice ones are hard to find, so really, I had no choice.

My lovely friend did get a few new things for herself and bubs, but great as the bargains were, the highlight of the trip was a long lunch at the Salty Lime in Port Noarlunga. Awesome food, great atmosphere. Always a favourite!

Hello, and welcome to my first post!

Last week on my way home from the doctors, despite having a virus and needing bed rest, I popped into the Darlington Salvos...

The Darlington Salvos has been a favourite for many years, ever since I bagged an as-new Mooks mini skirt (which I still own) in about 2002. It has a good mix of old and new, department store and high street. I haven't had much luck with shoes (I'm talking to you, size 6 Urban Sole boots...) but this place is a treasure trove of clothing. One of the best things about heading to Victor Harbor (apart from the Life Line Op Shop) was stopping off at Darlington on the way there and trawling the racks. Fast forward a number of years and move "Down South" means it's on my way home from work (and the doctor's surgery).

Half price yellow tickets meant I scored an awesome David Jones jacket from the 1960's for $22.50. It's lovely: chocolate brown with a satin (or sateen!) lining and a high neck. The collar has 4 little fingers of fur at the end, which is unusual. I don't think it's real, as by the look of it, this would have been an "affordable" coat in it's day.

My lovely coat passed the most important tests - fit, price, smell. The fourth is, of course, quality, but never underestimate Sard or my mum when it comes to shifting a nagging little stain. There was a risk that I would have left it on the rack had it not been half price... $44.95 for a coat you don't need is a little much, no matter how lovely. I have a shopping addiction, but even I have my limits!

"Oh this mint-condition David Jones coat from the 60's? Darlington Salvos: $22.50". See? Easy as that.
